Discover the expressive world of collage in this hands-on, beginner-friendly course designed for adults looking to spark creativity, build artistic confidence, and explore visual storytelling. Over six weeks, you'll experiment with a wide range of collage materials and be inspired by influential female artists:
Week 1: Hannah Höch: The Mother of Photomontage
Week 2: Wangechi Mutu: Surreal Dreamscapes
Week 3: Barbara Kruger: Sight Words
Week 4: Lygia Clark: Bold Abstraction
Week 5: Martha Rosler: Visual Juxtaposition
Week 6: Faith Ringgold: "Narrative Quilts"

Each session focuses on a different artist and theme, guiding you through playful and meaningful projects that combine cutting, layering, and personal expression. You'll learn how to work with color, shape, texture, and symbolism while exploring your own stories and style. No prior art experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore! Students may bring optional personal items (e.g., photos, letters, fabrics).
We will begin with a brief history of the artist/inspirational work(s), before exploring our final pieces. Some assignments will be prompted, while other projects encourage complete creative freedom. Classes will end with a mini-exhibition and an artist statements/share circle where you may receive positive critiques from your peers.
    For ages 18+.

For adults, all levels. Beginning with the basics, students will delve into different aspects of oil painting each week and move ahead at their own pace. Handouts will give information, but the real learning happens when you are painting and that will be the goal. Landscape will be the focus, but a Still Life will be provided for those interested. When working indoors students will work from sketches and photos. But if weather permits, those who would like to (and have their own equipment) can paint outside on the beautiful Art Center grounds (en plein air). Students will learn about supplies, design, value, shape, color, texture, and more. A supply list will be provided. For ages 18+.

Discover the beauty in imperfection through the art of Kintsugi—the traditional Japanese practice of mending broken pottery with a golden bond. Rather than disguising cracks, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming each piece into a unique and meaningful work of art.
In this 3-hour workshop, you'll mend your own decorative ceramic bowl (provided, styles vary), embracing flaws as part of its story. While traditional Kintsugi uses lacquer and gold powder, we’ll be using modern materials to ensure a comfortable and accessible experience.
Be prepared to take your time and enjoy the journey—this is a mindful, creative process that honors patience, presence, and personal expression.
Please note: Your finished piece is intended for decorative use only and should be left to dry overnight before taking it home.
Students agree to pay a $10 material fee to the instructor the day of the workshop.

    This one-day workshop is also offered Tuesday, January 6, 1 - 4 pm and Sunday, March 15, 9 am - 12 pm .

No experience required, just a love of art and the written word. Once you try Ekphrasis, you'll be hooked.

Sample writing in response to the painting "Adieu !" Alfred Guillou,1892.
    "For Love of Water"
Fred and James were panicky. It seemed they were losing control of everything. Their sailboat made eerie sounds as it bounced over the waves. The sail ripped apart and blew away into the unknown.

    ***
Morning had dawned bright and sunny. Their sailboat had stood ready in port, no sign of an impending storm.
A dream of navigating the ocean was something the dad and his son longed to achieve. They were drawn to the water like a child to a handful of candy.
Years of planning and preparation were behind them. Exercise to strengthen their bodies and increase their stamina along with positive thinking were practices they followed daily. They worked to build muscular arms and legs while they fueled their bodies with hearty proteins, vegetables, fruit and breads.

Step into the experimental spirit of the Dada movement and explore the groundbreaking photomontage techniques of Hannah Höch, one of the most influential collage artists of the 20th century. Students will experiment with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects, learning how artists use shapes, colors, textures, and forms to express feelings and ideas without creating realistic pictures. Pen and wash is a technique of combining two media and creating a fast, expressive way of depicting the world that surrounds us. It embraces our first experience with art, Drawing, and adds to it the joy of color and many ways to convey an artistic vision.
We will consider three of the most basic ways of using pen and wash (the “wash” can be watercolor or acrylic used like watercolor). Different types of composition, value, color, perspective, edges, and more will be discussed and explored.
Supplies for this way of working are minimal, making it perfect for many situations including working discreetly in public and plein air.
Clean color mixed with flowing black line is an approach that is fun, expressive, and delivers artistic joy.

Discover the alchemy of transformation in this hands-on mixed media workshop where everyday materials become vessels of expression, resilience, and beauty. Grit & Grace: A Faux Paper Journey invites participants to create richly textured faux papers using humble household items like toilet paper, napkins, and paper towels—materials often overlooked or discarded, yet full of hidden potential.

Through the intuitive processes of layering, tearing, staining, and embellishing, we’ll manipulate these fragile fibers into one-of-a-kind art pieces that speak to both vulnerability and strength. By incorporating threads, gold leaf, tea, coffee, chalk pastels, watercolors, and other simple additives, you'll explore how contrast—soft and bold, delicate and rough—can yield unexpected depth and meaning.

This workshop isn’t just about technique—it’s an invitation to reflect. Each layer becomes a metaphor for life’s challenges and graces: what we discard or hide can, with attention and intention, become something strikingly beautiful. No art experience is necessary; just bring your curiosity and willingness to get a little messy. You'll leave with a series of handmade faux papers that can be used in collage, bookmaking, journaling, or simply cherished as art on their own.

A $10 materials fee is due the day of the workshop.

    This one-day workshop is also offered Sunday, February 1, 9 am - 12 pm and Tuesday, February 1, 1 - 4 pm.

This class teaches how to move beyond casual observation and develop the ability to see the world as potential art. Students will learn to identify compositional elements in their environment, understand how visual elements work together, and transform their mobile phone photographs into compelling collage artworks.

Participants will cultivate the ability to recognize engaging visual elements in their everyday environment, from the interplay of light and shadow on familiar streets to the dynamic relationships between color, texture, and form in unexpected places. This technical class focuses on improving compositional skills through the creation of multi-layered, kaleidoscopic collages that reveal new patterns and relationships within your images. Through structured exercises and personalized guidance, students will understand how visual components work harmoniously together and translate their observations into impactful artworks. For those interested in further exploration, there will also be opportunities to turn your collages into paintings.

Whether you're looking to start a new artistic practice or simply learn to see your surroundings with fresh eyes, this class will change the way you experience the world around you.

Have you noticed that some of your paintings from photographs fall a little flat, seem overworked? This class will help you successfully translate your favorite photographs into beautiful paintings.

This course is designed to help you bypass issues such as getting caught up in creating an exact copy of the photo and/or dealing with value and color distortions. These common pitfalls can be avoided by studying how the eye of the camera captures images very differently than the human eye. You will learn how you can take advantage of these differences through creative expression. These choices will serve to enhance the colors and improve elements of your composition.

Painting from photographs also offers many practical advantages such as capturing a subject in motion and working in a controlled, indoor environment so that you can take as much time as you need to study the fine details of your subject.

For ages 18+. All skill levels welcome.

This is the perfect class for those who want to create whimsical and playful illustrations, inspired by some of the best children's book illustrators. This class will teach the basics of watercolor, along with so much more! After students learn firstly how to paint with watercolors, we will take it up a notch by learning how to combine this medium with other materials, such as colored pencils and gel pens, to create even more engaging illustrations.
We will also explore the basics of storytelling through artwork and learn about various picture book illustrators, discussing how they are able to successfully create narratives through a single image. We will go over all the steps required to create a finished illustration, starting off in the sketchbook and learning how to transfer a sketch into a beautiful work of art. Students will create illustrations based on their own life as well as inspired by nostalgic stories.
The most important thing students will gain from this class is an appreciation for the "unserious" art form of illustration. While picture books and illustration often get deemed as juvenile or kitschy in the fine art world, students will leave this class with a better understanding of just how valuable it can be to create fun and humorous artwork.
    For ages 18+.

Still Life / Oil Painting: Getting comfortable with oil paints
This workshop is designed to teach students how to see and understand values and how to paint light on form, using oil paints If you have never painted in oil paint, I will show you how to be comfortable with oils and even learn to love the medium. You will have longer open time... the paint will stay wet for a longer time, so you can really make decisions and changes to your work in process. Discover the beauty in imperfection through the art of Kintsugi—the traditional Japanese practice of mending broken pottery with a golden bond. Rather than disguising cracks, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming each piece into a unique and meaningful work of art.

"You learn a lot about a community by how much it embraces, elevates and provides access to the arts. AOY Art Center, a nonprofit artistic hub on Mirror Lake Road, provides countless opportunities for residents to embrace their artistic side as a vehicle for growth, creativity, and profound joy. Through adult classes, youth programs, and public events, AOY Art Center uses the arts to not only inspire community members but also connect them to one another."
