The fastest way to improve your painting (especially landscape painting) is to paint “en plein air” (in the open air). The richness of color and light our eyes see cannot be captured by a camera and there’s no substitute for the knowledge and experience you will gain! This class will explore the many possibilities of painting outdoors.
In addition to painting in general, we will discuss kinds of equipment, the supplies needed for painting in the great outdoors, time saving tips, ways to capture the mood and “sense of place” and the pitfalls and rewards of plein air. There is no need to have ever painted en plein air before, but a basic knowledge of painting in your preferred media is recommended.
Oils, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic are all welcome. A basic supply list will be provided.

This is the perfect class for those who want to create whimsical and playful illustrations, inspired by some of the best children's book illustrators. This class will teach the basics of watercolor, along with so much more! After students learn firstly how to paint with watercolors, we will take it up a notch by learning how to combine this medium with other materials, such as colored pencils and gel pens, to create even more engaging illustrations. We will also go over the basics of storytelling through artwork and learn about various picture book illustrators, discussing how they are able to successfully create narratives through a single image. The most important thing students will gain from this class is an appreciation for the "unserious" art form of illustration. While picture books and illustration often get deemed as juvenile or kitschy in the fine art world, students will leave this class with a better understanding of just how valuable it can be to create fun and humorous artwork.

    Teaching Artist: Devon Chebra

Spend your Thursday mornings in the garden at AOY learning two environmentally friendly processes to print with plants, photos, drawings and more! This experimental photography class utilizes the natural light-sensitivity of the plants that surround us, and a non-traditional use of traditional darkroom photo papers. Learn the basics of photograms utilizing eco-friendly lumen and chlorophyll printing processes, learn to make "negatives" from your digital photos or other source materials, and bring everything together to create your own multi-layered masterpieces.

Turn your collections of found objects and imagery into artwork that reflects your unique style and curious heart. Perfect for garden enthusiasts, collage artists, photographers, printmakers, visual poets and experimental artists of all skill levels!

No darkroom or toxic chemicals needed, and little to no water used in processing your prints. Come out and play, and leave (hehe) with everything you'll need to keep printing at home!

A $30 material fee is collected by the instructor during the first class (cash or check made payable to the instructor).

Here is a link for details regarding AOY Terms & Conditions. Online payment at time of registration is preferred. Please note, if you choose to use the "payment by check" option, that checks are accepted only during the first 4 weeks of registration and the check payment option expires two weeks prior to the start of each class. Checks must be received two weeks prior to the start date for completion of registration in order to be added to the class roster. Registrations will be cancelled if payments are not received prior to these deadlines.

We will learn to use the proportionate enlargement technique to make a small design larger... making a small box of crayons super big, or a tiny tin of mints into "mega-mints"! Enlarged packages will be fully colored using paints, markers, and colored papers.

Create a "shadow box" environment using a cigar box or shallow display. Create a library, car show, dramatic stage or any other "environment you can imagine." Explore the world of folding / layered landscapes using cut paper and 3D folding techniques. We will also learn to design and create a 3D "puzzle" that assembled will make an animal, flower, car, boat, or any other object that you'd like! Puzzles can be taken apart for transport and reassembled whenever you like! All material fees are included.

#53 Graphic Design, Illustration & Bookbinding!
    Teaching Artist - Elizabeth Taraba
    Week 5, 9 am - 12 pm
    Ages 12 - 16
    $225*

Enter the world of graphic design and illustration by creating a one of a kind Counting Book using markers, colored pencils, and glue. Come to camp with ideas for this fun 1 to 10 counting book. You can create an original story or just explore a favorite topic such as sea creatures, flowers, birds, or foods!

Imagine a crazy mixed up package design based on existing products, but altered to reflect a silly, humorous take on the product, or a "self portrait" style design. The boxes we create will be fully usable for storage or hiding small treasures! We will use mixed media such as watercolor, watercolor crayons, alcohol markers, permanent markers, colored pencils and acrylic paints in illustration board to create a large illustration for a favorite book passage, poem, quotation, or song lyric... the words can be incorporated into the design or left out. Lastly, we will learn the age old art of book binding by creating a 4 x 6 inch blank book of our very own, using drawing paper, cardboard, fabric, glue and traditional page stitching methods. These books make wonderful gifts, but it's nice to use your book as a journal or sketchbook! All material fees are included.

"You learn a lot about a community by how much it embraces, elevates and provides access to the arts. AOY Art Center, a nonprofit artistic hub on Mirror Lake Road, provides countless opportunities for residents to embrace their artistic side as a vehicle for growth, creativity, and profound joy. Through adult classes, youth programs, and public events, AOY Art Center uses the arts to not only inspire community members but also connect them to one another."
