From a still-life setup, you’ll learn the basics of drawing in order to do a preliminary sketch in oil directly onto canvas. Guided by your instructor, you quickly learn about shape and form and gain an understanding of how to see value to complete a tonal underpainting. An explanation of tools and mediums will be discussed, with a focus on pallet setup. While proceeding to a full-color painting, you will learn about color mixing and matching. The concepts and principles you’ll learn in Introduction to Oil Painting will help you develop the skills to further your journey to becoming a better artist.

The fastest way to improve your painting (especially landscape painting) is to paint “en plein air” (in the open air). The richness of color and light our eyes see cannot be captured by a camera and there’s no substitute for the knowledge and experience you will gain! This class will explore the many possibilities of painting outdoors.
In addition to painting in general, we will discuss kinds of equipment, the supplies needed for painting in the great outdoors, time saving tips, ways to capture the mood and “sense of place” and the pitfalls and rewards of plein air. There is no need to have ever painted en plein air before, but a basic knowledge of painting in your preferred media is recommended.
Oils, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic are all welcome. A basic supply list will be provided.

A successful painting depends on good composition, proper perspective, tonal value, and the blending of colors. In this class students learn about these aspects, which are part of the creative process for all mediums. This class is for students with some experience in painting or drawing with oils, acrylics or pastels. Using a photo as the image source, the instructor will do a demo beginning with thumbnail sketches and then show how to choose from different elements in order to simplify the composition. These steps are followed by blocking in shapes and shadows with a grisaille (aka underpainting) and finishing with color. Students can follow along with the instructor or work from their own reference source: a still life setup, a photo, or an iPad. At the end of each class everyone participates in a positive critique - a chance to see their work through other's eyes and reflect on their journey as an artist. All levels (with some experience).
