Teaching Artist: Basia Andrusko
You will be guided through all the steps of transforming a plain egg into a work of art. Students will learn the age old Ukrainian method of writing Pysanky. We will apply a series of melted beeswax and dyes to create traditional and individually creative patterns. When complete, the wax is melted off, revealing the vivid colors. Materials (eggs, stylus, dyes, wax…) and instruction will be provided to make one or two Pysanky, within the scope of the class. We will also discuss some pysanka history and folklore. Kits may be available for purchase, so that students can continue to make Pysanky and wax-resist batik-style eggs at home, for all seasons and occasions. Finished work of instructor (eggs and jewelry) may also be available for purchase. A $10 material fee (not included in the AOY fee) will be collected by the instructor at the start of class. Here is a link for details regarding AOY Terms & Conditions. Basia has been writing Pysanky for over five decades, gathered around the stove in the kitchen during Lent to carry on the Ukrainian tradition. She finds the creative process very soothing and meditative, and looks forward to the moment of melting off the wax — the reveal of the design. She writes pysanky with traditional patterns, but also enjoys creating egg art with fresh interpretations and original designs. She feels it is her duty and privilege to share this folk art with those interested and future generations. Contact basia@pysankybybasia.com for more details.
