I've Never Painted Before! Landscape Edition, Tuesday 1 - 3:30 pm (April 07, 2026)

Teaching Artist: James Bongartz

You can easily learn the basics of painting while using acrylic paints! Students will complete a "paint-along" study with the instructor during the 6 weeks and complete color mixing studies and thumbnail sketches. Students will explore the traditional blocking-in method while developing subject matter using expressive color, contrast and brushwork. After observing demonstrations, students will start off creating studies to learn basic techniques in color mixing and applications for building volume and space. The instructor will offer critiques to assist with constructive problem solving while exercising our vocabulary for the painting process. Supplies are provided by the student and a list will be prior to the start of class. The bulk of the investment of supplies will include paints, a few brushes, a canvas (first canvas provided). Level: Beginner thru Intermediate. This class session will offer a focus on landscape painting.

Oil Painting from a Photograph for Beginners, Tuesday 6:30 - 9 pm (April 07, 2026)

This is an oil painting class for the beginner painter to intermediate. The student will participate and develop their painting skills through creative and technical approaches. They will learn to make great choices during the process of conceptualizing their photo reference. Color mixing and brush application will be discussed, as well as composition and finding light in a visual image and painting it. The student can choose his or her own photograph to work on. Group critiques will be explored and encourage as you go. The instructor will provide a material list. For ages 18+.

Learn various techniques of making one of the oldest textiles in the world - felt using simple tools and natural fibers. Student will get start up kit with necessary supplies on the first day of class ($30 cash or check made payable to the instructor on the first day of class). Have you noticed that some of your paintings from photographs fall a little flat, seem overworked? This class will help you successfully translate your favorite photographs into beautiful paintings.

This course is designed to help you bypass issues such as getting caught up in creating an exact copy of the photo and/or dealing with value and color distortions. These common pitfalls can be avoided by studying how the eye of the camera captures images very differently than the human eye. You will learn how you can take advantage of these differences through creative expression. These choices will serve to enhance the colors and improve elements of your composition.

Painting from photographs also offers many practical advantages such as capturing a subject in motion and working in a controlled, indoor environment so that you can take as much time as you need to study the fine details of your subject.

All skill levels welcome.

Get breadth of experience with several watercolor techniques and tricks for beginners. Watercolors can be used in an amazing variety of ways. Step-by-step guides for layering, blending, flat & graded washing, wet-on-wet & wet-on-dry technique, blotting & splattering watercolor, sponge painting, watercolor with salt & sugar technique, dropping alcohol onto a wet watercolor.
Each technique requires a certain level of skill to pull it off successfully. You’ll love the way water and colors interact on paper in an untamed manner. Students will learn the ‘secret’ and practice the different watercolor techniques. Instructions and guidance, demonstrations and easy-to-follow tutorials will be given to you. The class involves creating your own watercolor paintings and hands-on exercises along with the instructor.
Allow yourself time to explore and experiment!
A basic supply list will be provided.

This course of drawing from observation is for artists of any level working in any monochrome media. A wonderful art form in itself, good drawing is a must for any artist, be it a painter, a sculptor, a print maker or a designer.

You will learn about composition, proportions, perspective, positive and negative shapes, light and shadow, value and other fundamentals of drawing. You will train your eye and hand, and will be acquainted with work of master draftsmen and various approaches to drawing. It’s recommended to work in charcoal on Bristol paper, but various drawing materials can be used and will be discussed.
A $65 modeling fee for the use of a model in two classes is included in the cost of this class. For ages 18+.

Teaching Artist: Laura Miner

Painting with earth pigments is a hands-on course using forged and natural earth materials to make art pigments and paint. Learn to prepare carbon black pigments (lamp, bone and vine) and process them into paint. We will use the same techniques and materials used by artists hundreds and even thousands of years ago. From each pigment you make either watercolor paint or oil paint based on your preference and create a painting with them to take home. This workshop combines history, science, art and fun. Skill level - beginner to advanced.

If you have ever needed a birthday card for a loved one, but store bought cards just don't seem to cut it, this is the perfect workshop for you! In this workshop taught by Grace Clark, artists of all ages are welcome to learn some watercolor basics and use their new skills to create whimsical and heartfelt greeting cards. Grace will demonstrate some watercolor techniques, hand lettering and adding mixed media to make their cards really stand out. This workshop will equip students with the skills required to create personal, unique cards for any occasion that their loved ones are sure to cherish. Recommended for ages 13 - adult.

Ekphrastic writing is the practice of creative writing from pieces of visual art. It expands our creativity and imagination while enhancing our love of putting words on the page. Each week we'll view a variety of pieces of art and engage in creative writing exercises with provided prompts as we explore nonfiction, fiction, poetry or words of your choice. Students are offered the opportunity to share their writing if desired with strength-based feedback provided.
No experience required, just a love of art and the written word. Once you try Ekphrasis, you'll be hooked.

"For Love of Water"
Fred and James were panicky. It seemed they were losing control of everything. Their sailboat made eerie sounds as it bounced over the waves. The sail ripped apart and blew away into the unknown.

Morning had dawned bright and sunny. Their sailboat had stood ready in port, no sign of an impending storm.
A dream of navigating the ocean was something the dad and his son longed to achieve. They were drawn to the water like a child to a handful of candy.
Years of planning and preparation were behind them. Exercise to strengthen their bodies and increase their stamina along with positive thinking were practices they followed daily. They worked to build muscular arms and legs while they fueled their bodies with hearty proteins, vegetables, fruit and breads.

Discover the joy of gelli plate printing in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop. Gelli printing is a playful, experimental form of printmaking that requires no prior experience and produces beautiful, one-of-a-kind prints.

Participants will explore layering, texture, and mark-making using stencils, stamps, and found objects. You’ll learn techniques such as sgraffito, stamping and impressions, masking, and building layered prints, all while embracing the unexpected and letting go of perfection.

This workshop is designed for beginners, and focuses on creative exploration rather than technical mastery. We will work on 5x3" plates to allow for better control of the medium, more experimentation, and more prints! Participants will leave with a collection of mini prints and the confidence to continue experimenting on their own.

A $10 material fee is due to instructor upon arrival, and please bring a package of baby wipes.

Learn to “see” as an artist does, then apply that new-found knowledge to oil painting! From a still-life setup, you’ll learn the basics of drawing in order to do a preliminary sketch in oil directly onto canvas. Guided by your instructor, you quickly learn about shape and form and gain an understanding of how to see value to complete a tonal underpainting. An explanation of tools and mediums will be discussed, with a focus on pallet setup. While proceeding to a full-color painting, you will learn about color mixing and matching. There’s no better way to advance your knowledge of drawing and painting than working from life. And if your love is landscape painting, you need to go outside to paint. A photo may help and can fill a need, but it can’t capture a particular spot’s color subtleties and sense of place.

Because very little equipment is needed, Pen and Wash becomes an extremely accessible way to approach plein air painting. Pen, paint, a brush, paper, and water is what you need. Minimum supplies and maximum portability!

We will discuss Principles of Art, different methods of using pen and wash, the specifics of landscape painting, and the many variables of painting en plein air. This kind of artwork functions not only as a way of gathering information for larger works, but also can be a finished painting that stands on its own.

It’s hard to beat clean color mixed with flowing black line. The wash in “Pen and Wash” can be watercolor or acrylic used as a watercolor on paper. As so many artists have found, our area is rich in subject matter, so finding a special spot to paint each week will not be hard!

Students may bring optional personal items (e.g., photos, letters, fabrics).

Recommended for ages 6 - 12. What happens when art breaks free from the everyday world? In this exciting exploration, young artists will discover the colorful, expressive universe of abstract art, where imagination takes the lead and there are no wrong answers.
Students will experiment with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects, learning how artists use shapes, colors, textures, and forms to express feelings and ideas without creating realistic pictures. Through hands-on activities, they'll explore the work of famous abstract artists and then create their own unique pieces using a variety of materials including paint, collage, sculpture, and mixed media.
Each session combines art history, creative techniques, and studio time to inspire fresh ways of seeing and making art. Your child will learn fundamental concepts like composition, color theory, and visual balance while having the freedom to make bold creative choices. Whether they're dripping paint like Jackson Pollock, building geometric sculptures, or creating textured abstract collages, students will develop confidence in their artistic voice and learn that art can communicate in ways beyond the literal.
This class is perfect for creative thinkers who love to experiment, as well as students who are ready to explore art in a new way. Students will complete multiple finished artworks to take home and share. All skill levels are welcome, and materials are provided. Please send your child in clothes that can get messy!

Clay Creations, Monday 4:30 - 6:30 pm (5 weeks) (April 27, 2026)

Get ready to sculpt fabulous creations with clay! Artists will score, slip, and join air clay to create many decorative and functional objects they can later paint, decoupage, or seal (in the following week's class). Projects may include a pencil holder, magnets, a trinket box, and more. Projects/designs may vary according to the season.

The last week of class will be spent finalizing the remainder of our creations from Week 4 with paint, etc. Guardians may want to provide their student with a shoe box/small box with tissue/newspaper to transport clay pieces home Weeks 2-6.

Recommended ages 9-12, but artists as young as 8 may register with prior clay experience. Clay is not food/water/heat safe.

A $25 materials fee is paid to the instructor at the beginning of the first class.

This beginning painting class will explore referencing the image, "Sea Cottages, a Study Referencing Wei Pen Imagery". The use of local color, color mixes and various paint surface applications are the main considerations and inspiration for choosing this reduced, colorful imagery. We will explore the blocking-in method weekly to sequentially build up our painting while also completing exercises in color mixing and paint application techniques. Jim will also lead discussions on supplies, painting styles, genres, color and color mixing during his weekly demonstrations. For ages 18+.

Working from plaster casts, live model and photos we will study proportions

The fastest way to improve your painting (especially landscape painting) is to paint “en plein air” (in the open air). The richness of color and light our eyes see cannot be captured by a camera and there’s no substitute for the knowledge and experience you will gain! This class will explore the many possibilities of painting outdoors.
In addition to painting in general, we will discuss kinds of equipment, the supplies needed for painting in the great outdoors, time saving tips, ways to capture the mood and “sense of place” and the pitfalls and rewards of plein air. There is no need to have ever painted en plein air before, but a basic knowledge of painting in your preferred media is recommended.
Oils, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic are all welcome. A basic supply list will be provided. For ages 18+.

This class is for lovers of classic children's books, such as Beatrix Potter's "Peter Rabbit" and Anita Jeram's "Guess How Much I Love You", and would like to create a book of their own in a similar watercolor style. Instructor Grace Clark will take you through the whole process of creating a short and sweet picture book, from coming up with an idea, to designing the characters, and of course making the finished illustrations. Students will learn about how to best format a picture book so the story flows properly, as well as when and where to add text to their illustrations. This is the perfect class for those who want to create whimsical and playful illustrations, inspired by some of the best children's book illustrators. This class will teach the basics of watercolor, along with so much more! After students learn firstly how to paint with watercolors, we will take it up a notch by learning how to combine this medium with other materials, such as colored pencils and gel pens, to create even more engaging illustrations.
We will also explore the basics of storytelling through artwork and learn about various picture book illustrators, discussing how they are able to successfully create narratives through a single image. We will go over all the steps required to create a finished illustration, starting off in the sketchbook and learning how to transfer a sketch into a beautiful work of art. Students will create illustrations based on their own life as well as inspired by nostalgic stories.
The most important thing students will gain from this class is an appreciation for the "unserious" art form of illustration. While picture books and illustration often get deemed as juvenile or kitschy in the fine art world, students will leave this class with a better understanding of just how valuable it can be to create fun and humorous artwork. Learn to paint plein air cityscape the Impressionist way in the center of historic Newtown, Bucks County. We will start with a short walking tour to select an appropriate motif and go through all the stages of painting discussing composition, light, color, texture and other aspects of picture-making. Color mixing and painting techniques for oils will be demonstrated, but all drawing/painting media are welcome. Artists of all levels are welcome.

Held on the final weekend of the Plein Air Open Exhibition, Monet Mingle celebrates the spirit of Claude Monet and the tradition of painting outdoors with an elegant summer evening of art, cocktails, and community.

Guests will stroll the AOY grounds at Patterson Farm while watching acclaimed artists Joe Gyurscak, Christopher Monteiro and Jessica Barnum create original plein air paintings live during the event. These works will culminate in a dramatic live auction finale, raising funds for AOY Art Center and the future vision for The Farmstead Arts Campus.

AOY Art Center is a 501c3 charitable organization.

Get ready for a deliciously creative week! In this hands-on decorating camp, artists will explore a new theme each day — designing and decorating edible creations inspired by food, nature, and more. Designs may vary.
Each morning begins with sketching the day’s treats, which will later be colored and refined after decorating time. By the end of the week, every artist will take home a personalized recipe book featuring the drawings of their finished creations.
PLEASE bring the required supplies noted below. *All cupcakes should be unfrosted.

ON THE MENU
Day 1 – Food Finds
Serve up some fun with food inspired by ramen, fortune cookies, and more.
Day 2 – Sea for Yourself
Dive into decorating with treasure chests, clam shells, and other ocean-themed treats.
Day 3 – Marshmallow Mania
Design rice-crispie sushi rolls and tie-dyed/painted marshmallow pops.
Day 4 – Party Time
Celebrate with festive designs like firecrackers, piñatas, and more.

Learn how to add shape, dimension, and visual interest to your artwork in this texture-focused creative exploration! Throughout the session, campers will experiment with a wide range of techniques designed to elevate flat surfaces into richly layered works of art.

Participants will create faux handmade textured papers using everyday household items**, discovering how simple tools can produce striking effects. We’ll explore paper manipulation methods—folding, crumpling, embossing, tearing, and sculpting—to see how paper itself can become a dynamic medium. Campers will also mix their own texture paste, learning how to customize thickness and consistency to achieve unique raised designs. From there, campers will dive into gelli plate printmaking, experimenting with stencils, found objects, and layering to produce bold, one-of-a-kind prints. Additional mixed-media techniques will be introduced as time allows, encouraging playful discovery and creative problem-solving.

By the end of the workshop, students will have a collection of textured papers and prints perfect for journals, collage, mixed media art, and future projects, along with the confidence to incorporate tactile elements into their artistic process. All material fees are included.

Learn to see as an artist does! Painting from a still life set up you’ll learn the basics of shape, form, value and color! You will learn to create a tonal under painting. You’ll learn about color mixing and matching while you progress to a full color painting. Then we will try our hand at other fun subject matters. Water-mixable oils paints are easy cleanup with no need for toxic solvents! All material fees are included.
