Learn how to add shape, dimension, and visual interest to your artwork in this texture-focused creative exploration! Throughout the session, campers will experiment with a wide range of techniques designed to elevate flat surfaces into richly layered works of art.

Participants will create faux handmade textured papers using everyday household items**, discovering how simple tools can produce striking effects. We’ll explore paper manipulation methods—folding, crumpling, embossing, tearing, and sculpting—to see how paper itself can become a dynamic medium. Campers will also mix their own texture paste, learning how to customize thickness and consistency to achieve unique raised designs. From there, campers will dive into gelli plate printmaking, experimenting with stencils, found objects, and layering to produce bold, one-of-a-kind prints. Additional mixed-media techniques will be introduced as time allows, encouraging playful discovery and creative problem-solving.

By the end of the workshop, students will have a collection of textured papers and prints perfect for journals, collage, mixed media art, and future projects, along with the confidence to incorporate tactile elements into their artistic process. All material fees are included.

Go Figure! Drawing Nude and Painting Clothed Live Model, Tuesday 9:30 am - 12 pm (September 08, 2026)

Painting and drawing from a live model are main components of the traditional art education. This course is addressing both. Students will learn about anatomy, proportions, gesture and other fundamentals of figurative art and get acquainted with different styles of figure drawing and painting.
All six sessions students will work from the same model. The first part is three sessions of drawing a nude model. The first session is sketching, and the next two are one long pose. The last three sessions are painting clothed model. The first session is sketching, and next two are one long pose, the same one as the long pose of the drawing of the nude. This curriculum will allow for in-depth study of the figure.
The course is recommended both beginners, interested in learning basics of figurative art, as well as experienced figurative artists looking for practice and further development of their skills.
Charcoal for drawing and oils for painting are recommended, but any media can be used. However, drawing media should be monochrome, paper should be white, and painting medium should be odorless. Full materials list will be distributed before beginning of the class. Model fee is included. For ages 18+.

The fastest way to improve your painting (especially landscape painting) is to paint “en plein air” (in the open air). The richness of color and light our eyes see cannot be captured by a camera and there’s no substitute for the knowledge and experience you will gain! This class will explore the many possibilities of painting outdoors.
In addition to painting in general, we will discuss kinds of equipment, the supplies needed for painting in the great outdoors, time saving tips, ways to capture the mood and “sense of place” and the pitfalls and rewards of plein air. There is no need to have ever painted en plein air before, but a basic knowledge of painting in your preferred media is recommended.
Oils, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic are all welcome. A basic supply list will be provided. For ages 18+.

Intermediate to Advanced. This painting class is a follow up to the beginner painting classes, "I've Never Painted Before In My Life!" Prerequisite class: "I've Never Painted Before In My Life!". "... Let's Do More" is an Intermediate class for students who have enjoyed repeating "I've Never Painted Before In My Life!" and wish to continue their painting journey using the blocking-in method. Join Devon John Chebra for a 6-week exploration of iPhone photography, an invitation to slow down, look closer, and use a tool you already carry in your pocket. This course introduces the fundamentals of iPhone photography, including composition, lighting, in-phone camera controls and editing, and visual storytelling. Through guided lessons and hands-on practice, participants will develop technical skills and their personal visual voice.

This is an oil painting class for the beginner painter to intermediate. The student will participate and develop their painting skills through creative and technical approaches. They will learn to make great choices during the process of conceptualizing their photo reference. *It is recommended to take "Whimsical Watercolor Illustrations" before this class, or to have some prior experience with watercolors.

This class is for lovers of classic children's books, such as Beatrix Potter's "Peter Rabbit" and Anita Jeram's "Guess How Much I Love You", and would like to create a book of their own in a similar watercolor style. Instructor Grace Clark will take you through the whole process of creating a short and sweet picture book, from coming up with an idea, to designing the characters, and of course making the finished illustrations. Students will learn about how to best format a picture book so the story flows properly, as well as when and where to add text to their illustrations. The end result of the class will be a wonderful, original storybook that you can take home and show to your loved ones! For ages 18+.

Constructing Cubism: The Art of Sound, Tuesday 6:30 - 9 pm (September 08, 2026)

Cubism threw out the rulebook and rebuilt the world in shapes, angles, and multiple perspectives. In this class, we'll dive into the movement through the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, learning how they deconstructed objects and reassembled them as intersecting planes and facets, revealing several points of view at once.
We'll start by exploring Cubist composition through mixed-media collage, working through form and fragmentation on a flat surface before building toward a 3-dimensional sculpture made from accessible, everyday materials. Inspired by Picasso's iconic 1912 cardboard Guitar, you'll construct your own multi-layered guitar collage from the ground up, arranging vibrant decorative papers, sheet music, and textures into a unified composition. In the process, you'll visually deconstruct musical imagery, play with spatial perspective, and pick up essential design and construction skills including composition layout, negative space management, templating, color contrast, and precision cutting and joining.
This is an adventurous, hands-on way to think like an artist and build like a sculptor. No experience needed — just curiosity and a willingness to jump in and make something with your hands. Come see how taking something apart can be the best way to understand how it goes together.
Building materials will be provided. Decorative paper and specialty collage elements are the responsibility of the student.

Have you noticed that some of your paintings from photographs fall a little flat, seem overworked? This class will help you successfully translate your favorite photographs into beautiful paintings.

This course is designed to help you bypass issues such as getting caught up in creating an exact copy of the photo and/or dealing with value and color distortions. These common pitfalls can be avoided by studying how the eye of the camera captures images very differently than the human eye. You will learn how you can take advantage of these differences through creative expression. These choices will serve to enhance the colors and improve elements of your composition.

Painting from photographs also offers many practical advantages such as capturing a subject in motion and working in a controlled, indoor environment so that you can take as much time as you need to study the fine details of your subject.

All skill levels welcome. For ages 18+.

Gouache is used as a fine art painting medium. We can work both abstractly or representationally with gouache and it is great for learning how to use color. With a series of exercises, I can teach you to see without necessarily relying on photographs as sources for your paintings. This class is for students with some experience in painting or drawing with oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal or graphite. It offers a comprehensive approach to enhancing your skills and focusing on the key elements needed when creating successful artwork. The instructor will assess each student's skill level and discuss their goals, providing guidance from start to finish depending on their needs. We will talk about composition, perspective, beginning with an underpainting (grisaille), tonal value, and mixing colors to achieve harmony. Students can choose their own subject matter, whether it’s a still life setup, a photograph, referencing an iPad, or a previous unfinished painting. The instructor will help you decide if you are unsure. Each class concludes with a positive group critique, allowing students to share their work and gain valuable insights from their class peers. Turn your collections of found objects and imagery into artwork that reflects your unique style and curious heart. Perfect for garden enthusiasts, collage artists, photographers, printmakers, visual poets and experimental artists of all skill levels!

This course of drawing from observation is for artists of any level working in any monochrome media. A wonderful art form in itself, good drawing is a must for any artist, be it a painter, a sculptor, a print maker or a designer.

You will learn about composition, proportions, perspective, positive and negative shapes, light and shadow, value and other fundamentals of drawing. You will train your eye and hand, and will be acquainted with work of master draftsmen and various approaches to drawing. It’s recommended to work in charcoal on Bristol paper, but various drawing materials can be used and will be discussed.
A $65 modeling fee for the use of a model in two classes is included in the cost of this class. For ages 18+.

Get breadth of experience with several watercolor techniques and tricks for beginners. Watercolors can be used in an amazing variety of ways. Step-by-step guides for layering, blending, flat & graded washing, wet-on-wet & wet-on-dry technique, blotting & splattering watercolor, sponge painting, watercolor with salt & sugar technique, dropping alcohol onto a wet watercolor.
Each technique requires a certain level of skill to pull it off successfully. You’ll love the way water and colors interact on paper in an untamed manner. Students will learn the ‘secret’ and practice the different watercolor techniques. Instructions and guidance, demonstrations and easy-to-follow tutorials will be given to you. The class involves creating your own watercolor paintings and hands-on exercises along with the instructor.

Whimsical Watercolor Illustrations, Friday 9:30 am - 12 pm (September 11, 2026)

Teaching Artist: Grace Clark

This is the perfect class for those who want to create whimsical and playful illustrations, inspired by some of the best children's book illustrators. This class will teach the basics of watercolor, along with so much more! After students learn firstly how to paint with watercolors, we will take it up a notch by learning how to combine this medium with other materials, such as colored pencils and gel pens, to create even more engaging illustrations.
We will also explore the basics of storytelling through artwork and learn about various picture book illustrators, discussing how they are able to successfully create narratives through a single image. We will go over all the steps required to create a finished illustration, starting off in the sketchbook and learning how to transfer a sketch into a beautiful work of art. Students will create illustrations based on their own life as well as inspired by nostalgic stories.
The most important thing students will gain from this class is an appreciation for the "unserious" art form of illustration. While picture books and illustration often get deemed as juvenile or kitschy in the fine art world, students will leave this class with a better understanding of just how valuable it can be to create fun and humorous artwork. For ages 18+.

And watercolor, with its ethereal qualities, is perfect for expressing a wide variety of possibilities.
Students will begin with simple skies, various cloud formations, and ways of using color to express skies. Then they will gradually increase in complexity using color, value, and edges to explore white clouds (they're not just white), storms, evening skies, and sunsets. You can do it all with only paper, 6-7 colors, and 4-5 brushes. We will work from life whenever possible. The skies at AOY Art Center are wonderful! For ages 18+.

Explore the creative world of altered art and assemblage in this hands-on mixed-media class. Using found objects, collage materials, and a variety of art supplies, you’ll transform different surfaces into unique works of art.
Students will create a Frida Kahlo–inspired shadowbox, a pocket art gallery created from playing cards using gel plate prints and collage materials, and other assemblage pieces and mixed-media creations, like decorative tags, ornaments, magnets, etc.
This class encourages experimentation, layering, and storytelling through art. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play with materials.
Perfect for adults who enjoy collage, mixed media, and turning ordinary objects into meaningful art.

Recommended for ages 6 - 12. What happens when art breaks free from the everyday world? In this exciting exploration, young artists will discover the colorful, expressive universe of abstract art, where imagination takes the lead and there are no wrong answers.
Students will experiment with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects, learning how artists use shapes, colors, textures, and forms to express feelings and ideas without creating realistic pictures. Through hands-on activities, they'll explore the work of famous abstract artists and then create their own unique pieces using a variety of materials including paint, collage, sculpture, and mixed media.
Each session combines art history, creative techniques, and studio time to inspire fresh ways of seeing and making art. Your child will learn fundamental concepts like composition, color theory, and visual balance while having the freedom to make bold creative choices. Whether they're dripping paint like Jackson Pollock, building geometric sculptures, or creating textured abstract collages, students will develop confidence in their artistic voice and learn that art can communicate in ways beyond the literal.
This class is perfect for creative thinkers who love to experiment, as well as students who are ready to explore art in a new way. Students will complete multiple finished artworks to take home and share. All skill levels are welcome, and materials are provided. Please send your child in clothes that can get messy!

Discover the beauty in imperfection through the art of Kintsugi—the traditional Japanese practice of mending broken pottery with a golden bond. Rather than disguising cracks, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming each piece into a unique and meaningful work of art.
In this 3-hour workshop, you'll mend your own decorative ceramic bowl (provided, styles vary), embracing flaws as part of its story. While traditional Kintsugi uses lacquer and gold powder, we’ll be using modern materials to ensure a comfortable and accessible experience.
Be prepared to take your time and enjoy the journey—this is a mindful, creative process that honors patience, presence, and personal expression.
Please note: Your finished piece is intended for decorative use only (not food/water/heat safe) and bringing a small box may be useful to transport your piece safely home.

Kinusaiga is a Japanese fabric art form that originated as a way to repurpose beautiful silk scraps from kimonos. The art reflects the Japanese concept of mottainai—the belief that valuable materials should be appreciated and not wasted.
Today, Kinusaiga is practiced around the world using a wide variety of fabrics and modern materials, while continuing to celebrate creativity, craftsmanship, and the beauty of textiles.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, participants will create a beautiful 8x12" Kinusaiga artwork to take home. Choose from a provided design or bring your own simple line-art (with areas larger than 1/4") on 8.5x11" paper. Participants are also welcome to bring their own fabric scraps to incorporate into their project.

Materials fee: $25 due to the instructor at the start of the workshop.
For ages 18+.

This workshop is also offered Tuesday, November 10, 1 - 4 pm.
