Recommended for ages 8 - 12.
Kon'nichiwa! Enrich your child’s creativity with influence from Japan. Artists will be inspired by a wide range of art styles, including ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy.
Kintsugi Bowl - Known as golden joinery, students will create their own decorative air clay bowl with textures* then mend broken pieces with gold glue.
Shibori Fabric Dyeing- Considered a manual tye-dyeing technique, students will explore how to make patterns on fabric using string.
Sumi-e Painting - Better known as ink painting, students will create a bamboo scene with strokes varying in length and pressure.
Kirigami 3D Koi sculpture - This art form incorporates both folding and cutting of paper to create a 3D object. Students will create a 3D koi fish using various mediums.
Shodo Calligraphy - Students will learn basic stroke techniques by grinding ink
blocks into an ink stone, using a calligraphy brush.
Chigiri-e Collage - Translated torn paper, students will use torn pieces of paper to create a scene of Mt. Fuji.
Haiku Art - Referred to as poetry art, students will create their own short poem to harmonize with their art.
Positive peer reviews and other projects may be offered, as time permits.
*This project uses dried pasta to create texture, please note any gluten allergies in advance.
Students as young as 8 may register for this class if they meet the following criteria: techniques focus on slower, intentional movements using a brush, scissors, and other materials; students should be able to remain seated and not rush through their work.
***This is a five week class for the Spring II session. No class Memorial Day, May 27.

Checks must be received two weeks prior to the start date for completion of registration in order to be added to the class roster. Registrations will be cancelled if payments are not received prior to these deadlines.
