Soho Photo Gallery is pleased to announce the 21st International Alternative Processes Competition. Located in lower Manhattan, SPG is New York City’s longest running co-operative photography gallery. All selected photographs will be exhibited at the Gallery as well as on our website. The opening reception is Thursday, November 14th from 6 to 8 pm.

    What are Alternative Processes?

Alternative processes include, but are not limited to: Albumen, Anthotype, Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Platinum/ Palladium, Gum Bichromate, Bromoil, Salt Print, Tintype, Ziatype, Daguerreotype, Image Transfers, Liquid Emulsion, Chemigram, Photogravure as well as handmade prints created from digital negatives. As long as the image originates using Alternative Processes and is not generated by AI, it may be entered into the Competition. There is no limitation as to subject matter.

    Juror

Our juror this year is Jill Endfield, a fine art photographer and author, who concentrates on historical techniques and alternative processes. She gives annual workshops and lectures in locations throughout the world. She has published three books on these subjects which have won awards since the first one was published 2002. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums as well as private collections.

Enfield’s series on immigration titled “New Americans and the Glasshouse” was first shown on Ellis Island in 2017 and has been exhibited around the country The exhibit occupied 6 galleries and included posters of new Americans, photos of Jill’s family, who escaped Nazi Germany, and the Glasshouse.

The Glasshouse is currently on view at the Griffin Museum. It contains Jill’s images of recent immigrants on the sides. You enter and exit through photos of Ellis Island. Her newest work is entitled "The Way Home." It consists of landscapes along the Hudson River. Both series were photographed using the wet plate collodion process to make ambrotypes. The work was then printed with Palladium to make prints 20" x 24."
