Discover the beauty of Japanese calligraphy while learning to write hiragana (phonetic Japanese script) through movement and brush. This six-week introductory course combines Japanese language and the art of brush calligraphy, making it a creative and approachable way to explore hiragana.
Students will learn fundamental strokes, stroke order, and rhythm while gradually working through the hiragana syllabary. Each week introduces a new group of characters along with opportunities for guided practice and artistic exploration.
As students become more comfortable with the brush, they will progress from individual hiragana characters to basic words, culminating in a finished Shodō artwork featuring hiragana.
This is an art-focused introduction to hiragana through the practice of Shodō (Japanese brush calligraphy). Through hands-on practice, students will develop the ability to recognize and read basic hiragana. We will not be studying Japanese grammar or constructing grammatical sentences. No prior knowledge of Japanese or calligraphy is required.
Bring a ream of computer paper, and $30 materials fee (to cover remaining materials) due the first day of class. A notebook is optional/may be beneficial.
